The Dare Wiki - What is All This About ?
The Dare Wiki is a crazy-creative-innovative-visionary-insane (check the one that suits you best) idea to develop and promote the Dare Paradigm.
Since the Dare Paradigm itself is fundamentally community driven, it seemed obvious that its own definition should be sprouting from and evolving through community efforts and contributions. And this is it ! Through this Wiki, we have thrown our initial ideas and thoughts to you, the community, believing you will catch up on them, enrich them, challenge them, destroy them, rebuild them, reshape them so that, eventually, given all these contributions and collective thoughts, they start living on their own.
From now on, we don't own this anymore. Connect and modify, comment or amend anything you consider appropriate.
Initial Thoughts and Ideas

The main idea is to render experimental data, experiments themselves and the resulting measures publicly and openly available by providing third-party certification, guarantee of reproducibility and allowing crowd-annotation, extension and interpretation.
The Dare Paradigm finds it roots in shared thinking by some researchers in the Document Analysis community, on conceiving a productive and efficient framework that would allow reproductible research results and achieve building work "standing on the shoulders of giants"[1] (actually those giants were probably Sitting on Anthills). It was first described in some informal white papers by Bart Lamiroy and Dan Lopresti at the CSE Department of Lehigh University.
Its core concepts consist of:
- Shared resources
- Crowd intelligence
- Certified peer evaluation through total transparency
Some of its concepts are hosted on the Lehigh DAE server.
This Wiki is an attempt to create a collective effort to formalize the Dare concepts by crowd editing of its concepts and thus making it a collective paradigm for experimental research.
This collective paradigm:
- is not a minor “tweak” it's rather an enormous, ground-breaking change;
- is enabled by infrastructure that largely exists – most pieces are already present, they just need to be put into place;
- could dramatically accelerate the rate of scientific discovery;
- has its power derived from community participation, but vision is so compelling that some version of this future is inevitable;
- needs a critical mass of early adopters (thought-leaders) will play a key role in guiding the vision to fruition. Despite open-access model, significant proprietary benefits are also possible;
- has a large potential for “meta” research (developing the paradigm).
How to Contribute to this Wiki
This is intended to be an open and collective contribution to the research community. Everything published here is licensed under Creative Commons and is detailed in the Dare:Copyrights section.
Currently the Dare Paradigm is declined in a visionary scenario of how we would like our community to work in the near, and not so near future. Each item and element in the scenario has five parts:
Concept Part
This part describes the generic concept behind the element of our global scenario, how it relates to the rest of the Dare Pardigm and what makes it new or interesting with respect to the current status quo.
Scenario Example Part
This part is a concrete illustration of how this concept could be instantiated in a real world situation, it may or may not be realistic or immediately realizable, but it gives a complementary view of the previous, more formal part.
Implementations Part
This part lists ideas of how the concept could end up being implemented or realized. This might be a list of directions to explore, existing tentatives or realizations that already or partially implement the concept, perhaps in other domains or contexts.
Scientific Issues Part
This part lists the harder scientific or technological hurdles that need to be overcome to realize the concept.
References
Any pre-existing work, or related items that are worth referencing and are relative to the concept.
